Snape is a cold and seemingly cruel man. He is the least favorite man of most of those who meet him and he does not approve of people who backtalk to him. Respect is what he has earned which means he has the right to it. And those of Gryffindor are often so arrogant...

But there is more to him than that. However, finding out will be a challenge. He has a broken childhood in many ways that has heavily influenced him to be the man he is now. Insanely private, he's not likely to share any of this willingly.
