A letter to a man I have not believed in. Very well, if there is no other choice.

My father informed me every year that I knew him that you did not exist. First that such a person wouldn't exist for a child like myself. Then that you simply were not real. Since I watched the continual struggles in my family, the pain, how could he not have been right?

I want nothing for Christmas. I haven't for many years now. Not since the one thing I ever wanted was taken from me. You may take all those gifts and leave me in peace.

I can watch over the others since you are, quite simply put, useless. I will see to it that Lily keeps her smile without your pathetic nature of "giving".

Remain as you are. A failed existence to give hope to children.

Letters to Santa Claus. How wonderfully childish.

Then again, I believe there are some who manage to be never grow up. So perhaps the curse is rather appropriate to their immature ways.

Does this mean you're going to frown upon my writing a letter to Santa? [She's teasing him a bit really but she has contemplated it.]

You would write it even if I did frown upon it.

I would and you'd expect nothing less.

What would you ask for?

[He's curious.]

[She hesitates before answering.]

A number of things that can't be given.

[Like James, years back with Harry, a war that had never happened. She refuses to leave it at that. It's too somber and far too easy wallow in if she leaves it at that.]

And a cashmere scarf. I've got to give him something to do.

Cashmere?

It's a kind of wool, Severus.

If you insist. [Someone will be getting cashmere for Christmas.]

[He will be making a note to research the wool to get her a scarf.] I do.

You're going to be taking that back and saying 'Lily, you were right'.

I wouldn't dream of doing such a thing.

We'll see. [All the smug teasing.]

The thought had occurred to me.

I cannot say I'm surprised.

Should I be disappointed that I no longer surprise you or encouraged that you know me so well?

Also more flattering. [She pauses a moment.] The boy that was living you, Draco...he's left, hasn't he?

Are you all right? [She asks in a soft but firm sort of voice.]

He was but a student. [That he swore he would protect.]

[Lily fixes him with a look. Yes. That's the look.]

[Uh-oh. He knows that look.]

[Oh good. He hasn't forgotten that look.] Severus, that was not what I asked.

[He will never forget the look.] Yes.

[The look goes away and she smiles softly at him.]

I'll come by and visit next week. [She's going to bring a tree and make you decorate.]

[So, so apprehensive, but in light of Lily's little speech, he's...trying, okay? It's not as though he'll have many years after the fact to learn forgiveness the way Harry and George and Ginny will. So he ought to at least try, right?

[He lifts a brow because this is truly a surprise. That sounds like a civil tone coming from this one.]

Both, I should think, seeing as most of my companions are 'wonderfully childish.'

[It's in their natures for this to not last long.]
